Hello 402 Families,
Happy New Year!
I hope you all had relaxing, restorative, and super fun winter breaks filled with family and friends.
This week Wendy Waring will be teaching Mon, Wed & Fri. Thamika will be teaching Tues & Thurs. Wendy met with Michele and Kati (4th gr teacher team) on Friday afternoon to make a plan for this week's learning. I will be teaching math lessons. Madelene will begin teaching on Monday, January 13th.
The combined reading, writing, and social studies units on the American Revolution are an exciting part of the 4th grade curriculum and we will be going into them full force in the coming weeks. We’ll review common nonfiction text structures, synthesizing information from multiple resources, and will continue practicing note taking.
Along with starting new units in literacy, we’ll begin our study of fractions in math. Students should still be practicing their multiplication tables and reviewing long division at home. Feeling comfortable with both multiplication and division will help students calculate for common denominators as we add and subtract fractions. Your child will be coming home with their January Homework Menu and spelling words tomorrow. This month we’ll have a geography quiz on the original 13 Colonies. I am attaching resources to help you study at home.
Social Studies Native American posters are due on Friday.
This Friday is field trip Friday! Wendy, John and myself will be escorting the students to MoMath, the museum of math in Chelsea where students will engage in an activity called Mobius Madness: Students construct fascinating topological objects such as Möbius bands, discovering their fundamental patterns and structures. Hands-on activities lead students to discover the surprising properties hidden around every twist and turn!. We will leave the school shortly after 9:00 and returning by 12:00. Students will eat lunch upon returning to school that day. Please let me know if you child will need a school lunch that day. Please send in the signed permission slip which was handed out today and is attached. We will need two chaperones for Friday.
Attached are pictures of Friday's fraction game Build a Wall. Today, we talked about Decomposing Fractions. Students practiced decomposing fractions in multiple ways. This type of flexible thinking is what builds math fluency and makes math fun.
Best,
Kerry
